Koulier: Preserving the Art of Czech BlownGlass Christmas Ornaments

The tradition of handblown glass Christmas decorations is a cherished part of Czech cultural heritage—an art form passed down through generations and admired around the world. At the heart of this tradition is Koulier, a Czech glassworks devoted exclusively to the handmade production of blown and handpainted Christmas ornaments.

Each ornament created at Koulier is shaped, blown, silvered, and painted entirely by hand. Master glassblowers and painters give life to every piece, ensuring that no two ornaments are ever exactly alike. These unmistakable decorations transform interiors into warm, festive spaces and create an atmosphere rich with craftsmanship and tradition.

Saving a Vanishing Craft

In September 2021, Koulier was founded in the small village of Oflenda in the Vysočina (Highlands) region of the Czech Republic with a clear mission: to save the disappearing craft of traditional blownglass Christmas ornament production. The company was established following the closure of a historic ornament factory in nearby Horní Bradlo, one of the last remaining facilities of its kind in Bohemia.

The Chrudim region had long been associated with glass Christmas ornament production, a craft whose roots stretch back to the early 20th century. These ornaments once carried the reputation of Czech craftsmanship across the globe. With the closure of local workshops, the future of this art was uncertain—until Koulier provided new opportunities for experienced glassblowers and painters to continue their lifelong work.

Crafted by Masters, Made in Czechia

Koulier’s artisans have spent decades mastering their craft, and the company takes great pride in the fact that approximately 99% of its production is sold within the Czech domestic market. All Koulier products are made entirely in-house—100% handcrafted by the company’s own skilled employees. Customers value the authenticity, exceptional quality, and individuality that only true handmade work can offer.

The company’s dedication to tradition has already earned international recognition. In November 2022, Koulier ornaments from its Art Nouveau collection were selected to decorate the first purely Czech Christmas tree at the European Parliament in Brussels, showcased during the Czech Republic’s presidency of the European Union. Koulier decorations can also be found at Loučeň Castle, particularly during the annual Christmas Tree Story exhibition.

Celebrating Tradition in New Ways

Koulier continues to celebrate Czech glass artistry through public events and cultural initiatives. In July 2022, the company entered the Czech Book of Records for bringing together the largest number of glass swans in one location. This achievement launched what is now the Swan Festival, an event Koulier plans to carry forward as a tradition of its own proving that, as the artisans say, Christmas decorations are best bought in the summer.

Visitors to Oflenda are invited to witness the artistry behind Czech blownglass Christmas ornaments firsthand, observing each step of the production process and gaining a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship involved.
